Remodeling a kitchen in Calabasas starts at the city counter

Calabasas is not a Los Angeles County permit town. The city runs its own Building & Safety Division, does its own plan check, and takes submittals through its own SmartGov portal, with some of the strictest standards anywhere in the corridor. That single fact shapes how a kitchen project here actually goes.

There's even an LA County building office on Agoura Road, and it doesn't handle Calabasas homes. The city runs its own desk. If your contractor doesn't know that, keep looking. That county office serves Hidden Hills, Westlake Village, and the unincorporated county, and homeowners here mix the two up all the time.

Now the honest scope line. A kitchen that stays inside your existing walls is a building-permit matter, and we prepare the drawings, submit them, and shepherd them through any correction cycles. The city's stricter design standards come into play the moment scope touches the exterior: enlarging a window, opening the back wall to the yard, adding square footage. Because our designers already draw to those standards, a project that grows doesn't mean starting over.

That is the thing you are actually hiring: the same team that draws your plans employs the crew that builds them. Nothing gets handed to a stranger at the point where the drawing meets the framing.

  • Drawn to the city's own standards
  • SmartGov filing handled for you
  • Interior-only? No design review

What your kitchen remodel includes

One contract covers the whole job: layout and wall changes, cabinetry, counters and stone, lighting and electrical brought to current California code, plumbing and gas, flooring and paint. When a wall is carrying load, we bring in structural engineering and manage it. You never chase an engineer or carry drawings between two companies.

The other half of the job is material sourcing, and it is the part homeowners underestimate. We source cabinetry, stone, tile, and fixtures ourselves. You choose finishes with our designers; we handle ordering, delivery timing, and returns. You are never project-managing a backordered faucet from your kitchen table, and the schedule doesn't slip because a slab showed up cracked.

Every photograph on this page is our own work: kitchens, baths, and ground-up builds from our California portfolio, labeled for exactly what they are. No stock photography, no borrowed projects. When our first Calabasas kitchens are finished, they will go on this page with the city's name on them.

Layout and structure

Walls opened, beams sized and permitted, soffits taken out, islands set where the work in a kitchen actually happens. Structural engineering is brought in and managed by us whenever a change calls for it.

Cabinetry, counters, and stone

Cabinetry specified with our in-house design team, then stone and tile selected from our own sourcing. One company carries your finish schedule from selection through installation.

Electrical, plumbing, and gas

Circuits, lighting, and outlets brought to current California code; supply lines, drains, and gas runs handled while the walls are open (inspected, not buried).

Flooring, paint, and the finish

Floors, trim, paint, and the punch list that decides whether a kitchen feels finished. Final walkthrough with the same people who ran demo day.

From The Oaks to Old Town — we build to the street you're on

Calabasas is not one kind of house. A guard-gated estate, a 1970s home near the lake, a hillside lot off Mulholland, and a family street near the schools are four different jobs, and the difference shows up in access and scheduling long before it shows up in finishes.

The Oaks and the gated communities

Gate lists, certificates of insurance, and community work-hour windows are ours to manage, not yours, and you see the same crew faces at the gate every morning. We work to the standard the gates next door expect: Calabasas shares a ZIP code with Hidden Hills, and it shows in what homeowners here ask for.

Calabasas Park, around the lake

Much of this housing stock went up in the 1970s and 80s: compartmentalized kitchens, closed galley layouts, soffits hiding ductwork. The classic project here is opening the kitchen to the family room. We design the beam, permit it, and build it as one job instead of three.

The Mulholland corridor and the hillside streets

Narrow access, sloped lots, and the city's hillside rules. We plan deliveries and material staging around the street you actually live on, protect the pavement and the landscaping, and draw to the hillside requirements from day one.

The family streets near the schools

Not every Calabasas kitchen is a showpiece for a magazine. Plenty of our work is a family kitchen that has to survive homework, dinner, and a dog. Built well, on schedule, by people who clean the site before they leave.

How it works

Four steps, and you know exactly who to call at every one of them.

  1. 01

    Call or send the form

A real person calls you back in 5 minutes during business hours. No one else in this corridor advertises a response time. We do, because you should be able to hold us to it.

  2. 02

    Free on-site estimate

We walk the kitchen with you, listen to how you actually use it, measure what's there, and give you a written scope. Nothing is owed for the visit.

  3. 03

    Design and permits

Our in-house design team draws the plans and submits them to Calabasas Building & Safety through the SmartGov portal. If corrections come back, we handle them. You are not the messenger between a designer and a plan checker.

  4. 04

    Build

One licensed crew, a written schedule, a site cleaned daily, and a final walkthrough. Design and permitting run in weeks for interior work; most full kitchens build out in one to three months depending on scope.

Why Calabasas homeowners pick Mayer's Construction

The short version: one family company does the drawing, the permitting, the sourcing, and the building, so there is no hand-off for your project to fall through.

When you call, you talk to the builder, not a call center that sells your number to four contractors.

CA License #1063024 is a state license, which means we are licensed for every city in California, including Calabasas. Verify it yourself. The CSLB lookup link sits at the bottom of this page and takes one click.

In-house design team

Layout, cabinetry, finishes, lighting, and the permit drawings, all under one roof. You never hire an architect separately or carry drawings between companies.

No subcontractors

One licensed Mayer's Construction crew takes the kitchen from demolition to final walkthrough. That is why our schedules hold. You are never waiting on a tile sub who took another job across town.

Our own material sourcing

We order, stage, and check cabinetry, stone, tile, and fixtures before demo day, so your schedule is never hostage to a delivery someone asked you to chase yourself.

Rated 5.0 across California — and new to Calabasas

Here is the part most contractor pages leave out. We are the Bay Area's 5.0-star design-build team, now serving Calabasas. We have not finished a kitchen in this city yet, so you will not find a Calabasas testimonial on this page, and you will not find a borrowed photo with a Calabasas caption under it.

What we bring instead is checkable. 17 years of family design-build. A 5.0-star rating across California. An active state contractor's license, CA #1063024, free to look up on the CSLB site. And a design team that already knows how this city's own permit desk works. Look at the work, check the license, ask us hard questions on the phone, and judge for yourself.

Our first Calabasas clients get the same designers, the same crew, and the same written schedule as everyone else, from a company that intends to earn this city one kitchen at a time.

Questions Calabasas homeowners ask

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel in Calabasas?
Almost always. Anything that touches electrical, plumbing, or structure needs a permit from the City of Calabasas Building & Safety Division. The city runs its own desk and its own plan check through the SmartGov portal. It is not LA County, even though a county building office sits on Agoura Road. We prepare the drawings, submit them, and handle any correction cycles for you.
Will my kitchen remodel trigger Calabasas design review?
Usually not. A kitchen that stays inside your existing walls is a building-permit matter, not a design-review case. The city's stricter review applies when you change the exterior: enlarge a window, open the back wall to the yard, or add square footage. If your project grows in that direction, our in-house designers already draw to the city's standards, so you are not starting over.
How long does a kitchen remodel take in Calabasas?
For interior work, plan on design and permitting in weeks, and construction in the one-to-three-month range depending on scope and materials. You get a written schedule before demolition, and because one crew handles the whole job, you are not losing weeks between trades.
Do you work in The Oaks and other gated communities?
Yes. Gate lists, certificates of insurance, and community work-hour rules are ours to manage, not yours. You see the same crew faces every day, and the site is left clean. The standard guard-gated communities expect is the standard we build to everywhere.
Who designs the kitchen?
Our own in-house design team (layout, cabinetry, finishes, lighting, and the permit drawings, all under one roof). When structural engineering is required, we bring it in and manage it. You never hire an architect separately or carry drawings between companies, and we source the materials ourselves so nothing stalls the schedule.
Do you use subcontractors?
No. One licensed Mayer's Construction crew takes your kitchen from demolition to final walkthrough. That is why our schedules hold. You are never waiting on a tile sub who took another job across town.
Have you built kitchens in Calabasas before?
We are the Bay Area's 5.0-star design-build team, now serving Calabasas. Our portfolio is real California work, labeled honestly. No borrowed photos. What we bring to Calabasas is 17 years of family design-build and a design team fluent in how the city's own permit desk works. Look at the work, check our license, and judge for yourself.

They worked hard to capture our vision, and if we ever ran into any issues, they worked with us to figure them out. We would happily use them again for another project.

Impeccable workmanship. Mike was a stickler for quality — insisting the tiles have mitred corners, even if I didn’t ask for it. Great communications, every step of the way.
